Morel Mushroom Hunting
This time of year marks the beginning of Morel mushroom season. We first discovered Morel mushrooms a few years ago down in West Virginia. The hunt alone was so exciting, we decided to see if there might be any Morels on our property here in Caton, NY. We’d never actually seen them here before, but we had never actually looked either. One warm spring day I was watching my grandson and decided to take him for a walk. Carrying him up on my shoulders, I started walking up one of our woodland trails, down toward the fish preserve. I suddenly got the feeling I needed to stop. I looked down and right between my feet stood a large beautiful Morel mushroom! I had stumbled upon a whole batch, just to the right of the trail under the honeysuckle bushes. I was so excited, I snapped a picture and sent it right to my husband. Later that evening we decided to 4-wheel down around the Marsh Creek cabin, and just randomly stopped next to a large tree. Getting off the 4-wheeler, we nearly stepped on another large Morel. We had stumbled upon another batch! It seemed awfully coincidental that we’d found 2 large batches of Morel mushrooms without even trying! Those two large batches are all we found that year, and unfortunately, last year was not a good season for them. We look forward to the hunt again this year. Not only are they exciting to hunt for, they are exciting to eat. If you’re looking for a new adventure this spring, try out Morel mushroom hunting! It’s not only fun, it’s tasty too!!
